Today's blessings

The weather is beautiful for October 29 in Missouri. Couldn't help but think how lucky I am (even though I have a cold and my voice is gone) that I can enjoy this day. Story Hour was this morning and I never get tired of the little ones and their enthusiasm for everything. we've learned "The five little pumpkins" this year and it was a hit. My house is fairly clean. I have about 3 good books to finish and one to listen to when I get a chance - like the days I'm doing housework and need a distraction.

One annoyance that bugs me is the flood of political calls we are getting - even in the library.I am totally insulted when I answer the phone and it is a computer. Can't even talk back to that. I can try to play tricks on the minds of pollsters when there is a real person. Six more days

Reading Adventures

Hey, I found a neat blog for a library person. http://ReadingAdventures.blogspot.com. I want to follow

No time, No time

No time, no time, again I say, No time. I want to get to this blog more often, but something always happens. Now my mother has shingles. She's miserable, of course. She says, "What have I done to make God punish me like this?". I try to tell her, He's testing her and she is flunking. I really do sympathize with her, though. They're on her face, and they look miserable. I know she's uncomfortable. By the way, she's 98 yrs. old. She will be 99 on Dec. 5, so her patience has about run out.

Had an odd situation in the library yesterday. This guy locked his keys in his van, and totally lost it. He kept saying, "Why do these things have to happen to me?". Well, duh, you locked the door without taking the keys. He called his brother to come get him, bring the extra key, something. The brother told him how stupid he was on the phone and he started using the good ole F....word, so I reminded him this was a library and there were children present. Brother didn't rescue him until about 15 minutes before closing time. The teen-agers were laughing at him and that didn't help the situation, but I couldn't blame them. It was really weird. I guess Halloween is coming.

Money, Money, Money

With all the wall street news, panic even hits here in rural Missouri. People like me ( senior with investments) feel anxiety in one way, people who still have a 401k are nervous about that and young people who live from payday to payday are waiting for the other shoe to fall. Gas prices, though down somewhat, are still high and we all have to drive somewhere to get anything.

For us, gas and groceries are at least 5 miles away. Better prices (and variety) gas and groceries are at least 30 miles away. Food has gone up so much that we don't eat as well as we used to eat. Our gardens are pretty much gone this time of year with utility costs coming along with winter.

Do we care who is elected president? Not really. We don't have much hope that any politician will do any thing to help us here. Our food pantries are crying for help. We all try to share, but there is not much to share.

There is much disillusion with government. The bailout, rescue or whatever seems to us to be the final insult to this rural area. We cannot understand why somebody in Washington cannot see what is happening. We see it. Why can't they?

That's my soapbox for today. You can probably tell that I watched part of the presidential debate last night, and that made me more disgusted than ever with the powers that be.

My world is good though. We own our house. I still have a job for now. The Lord watches over us. But like Mrs. Obama, I'm not quite as proud of my country right now.

back at it

I'm really disappointed that I haven't been able to make more time for this blog. I had high hopes when I set it up, but they haven't really come to pass. The changing seasons are making me sneeze, but I love fall. Can't help but remember other autumn days when it was expected that we take a leaf looking drive sometime in October. Now we are too busy. That's not the way it is supposed to be

Tonight is the big VP debate. We'll probably sit through it and analyze each word even though we don't like either candidate. I figure we'll like them less before November 4 comes around. I remember the first inaugeration of George W.. A young man had car trouble when he was traveling through Farber and ended up in the library because nothing else was open. He had his beautiful little daughter with him, and he needed to walk to the local machine shop, so I volunteered to watch her. I turned on our tv hoping to entertain her, forgetting that this was on almost every station. This tiny, little girl sat on the floor with her eyes glued to the screen as George took the oath. Permanent picture for my mind.

I'm gone now until Saturday, but I promise to get with it in a little while
